Surah Al-An'am (The Cattle), Verse 42

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَاۤ اِلٰۤی اُمَمٍ مِّنْ قَبْلِكَ فَاَخَذْنٰهُمْ بِالْبَاْسَآءِ وَالضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَتَضَرَّعُوْنَ ۟

Wa laqad arsalnaaa ilaaa umamim min qablika fa akhaznaahum bil ba'saaa'i waddarraaa'i la'allahum yata darra'oon

“Before thee We sent (messengers) to many nations, and We afflicted the nations with suffering and adversity, that they might learn humility.”
