He Frowned

Surah 8042 Ayahsmeccan
Abasa42 verses

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ ۟

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

1

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰۤی ۟

Abasa wa tawallaa

(The Prophet) frowned and turned away,

2

اَنْ جَآءَهُ الْاَعْمٰى ۟

An jaa-ahul 'a-maa

Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).

3

وَمَا یُدْرِیْكَ لَعَلَّهٗ یَزَّݪ ۟

Wa maa yudreeka la'allahu yaz zakkaa

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-

4

اَوْ یَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرٰى ۟

Aw yazzakkaru fatanfa 'ahuz zikraa

Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?

5

اَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنٰى ۟

Amma manis taghnaa

As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,

6

فَاَنْتَ لَهٗ تَصَدّٰى ۟

Fa-anta lahu tasaddaa

To him dost thou attend;

7

وَمَا عَلَیْكَ اَلَّا یَزَّكّٰى ۟

Wa ma 'alaika allaa yaz zakka

Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).

8

وَاَمَّا مَنْ جَآءَكَ یَسْعٰى ۟

Wa amma man jaa-aka yas'a

But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,

9

وَهُوَ یَخْشٰى ۟

Wahuwa yakhshaa,

And with fear (in his heart),

10

فَاَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهّٰى ۟

Fa-anta 'anhu talah haa

Of him wast thou unmindful.

11

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ۟

Kalla innaha tazkirah

By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:

12

فَمَنْ شَآءَ ذَكَرَهٗ ۟

Faman shaa a zakarah

Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.

13

فِیْ صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ۟

Fi suhufim mukar rama,

(It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour,

14

مَّرْفُوْعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ۟

Marfoo'atim mutah hara,

Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy,

15

بِاَیْدِیْ سَفَرَةٍ ۟

Bi'aidee safara

(Written) by the hands of scribes-

16

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ ۟

Kiraamim bararah

Honourable and Pious and Just.

17

قُتِلَ الْاِنْسَانُ مَاۤ اَكْفَرَهٗ ۟

Qutilal-insanu maa akfarah

Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah;

18

مِنْ اَیِّ شَیْءٍ خَلَقَهٗ ۟

Min aiyyi shai-in Khalaq

From what stuff hath He created him?

19

مِنْ نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهٗ فَقَدَّرَهٗ ۟

Min nutfatin khalaqahoo faqaddarah

From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions;

20

ثُمَّ السَّبِیْلَ یَسَّرَهٗ ۟

Thummas sabeela yas-sarah

Then doth He make His path smooth for him;

21

ثُمَّ اَمَاتَهٗ فَاَقْبَرَهٗ ۟

Thumma amatahu fa-aqbarah

Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave;

22

ثُمَّ اِذَا شَآءَ اَنْشَرَهٗ ۟

Thumma iza shaa-a ansharah

Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again).

23

كَلَّا لَمَّا یَقْضِ مَاۤ اَمَرَهٗ ۟

Kalla lamma yaqdi maa amarah

By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him.

24

فَلْیَنْظُرِ الْاِنْسَانُ اِلٰى طَعَامِهٖۤ ۟

Falyanzuril insanu ilaa ta-amih

Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it):

25

اَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَآءَ صَبًّا ۟

Anna sabab nalmaa-a sabba

For that We pour forth water in abundance,

26

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْاَرْضَ شَقًّا ۟

Thumma sha qaqnal-arda shaqqa

And We split the earth in fragments,

27

فَاَنْۢبَتْنَا فِیْهَا حَبًّا ۟

Fa ambatna feeha habba

And produce therein corn,

28

وَّعِنَبًا وَّقَضْبًا ۟

Wa 'inabaw-wa qadba

And Grapes and nutritious plants,

29

وَّزَیْتُوْنًا وَّنَخْلًا ۟

Wa zaitoonaw wanakh la'

And Olives and Dates,

30

وَّحَدَآىِٕقَ غُلْبًا ۟

Wa hadaa-iqa ghulba

And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees,

31

وَّفَاكِهَةً وَّاَبًّا ۟

Wa faki hataw-wa abba

And fruits and fodder,-

32

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِاَنْعَامِكُمْ ۟

Mata'al-lakum wa li-an'amikum

For use and convenience to you and your cattle.

33

فَاِذَا جَآءَتِ الصَّآخَّةُ 

Faiza jaa-atis saakhah

At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,-

34

یَوْمَ یَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ اَخِیْهِ ۟

Yauma yafir-rul mar-u min akheeh

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother,

35

وَاُمِّهٖ وَاَبِیْهِ ۟

Wa ummihee wa abeeh

And from his mother and his father,

36

وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَبَنِیْهِ ۟

Wa sahi batihee wa baneeh

And from his wife and his children.

37

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ یَوْمَىِٕذٍ شَاْنٌ یُّغْنِیْهِ ۟

Likul limri-im-minhum yawmaa-izin shaa nuy-yughneeh

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.

38

وُجُوْهٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ ۟

Wujoo huny-yauma-izim-musfira;

Some faces that Day will be beaming,

39

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ۟

Dahi katum mustab shirah

Laughing, rejoicing.

40

وَوُجُوْهٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ عَلَیْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ۟

Wa wujoohuy yauma-izin 'alaiha ghabar a

And other faces that Day will be dust-stained,

41

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ۟

Tarhaquha qatarah

Blackness will cover them:

42

اُولٰٓىِٕكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ 

Ulaa-ika humul-kafa ratul-fajarah

Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity.
